Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020

Kim Sung-ho appointed as Artistic Director

Changwon Cultural Foundation (Director: Kang Je-gyu) hosted its 2nd Steering Committee meeting for the Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 at 14:00 on the 29th (Tue) to appoint an Artistic Director for this year’s Biennale, which requires extensive experience in planning and executing various exhibitions and events along with a deep understanding of unique regional characteristics, and an eye for selecting outstanding artists. Committee members - convened in the conference room at the Foundation - elected Kim Sung-ho (art critic, independent curator), who led the Special Exhibition of Korea at the Dakar Biennale 2018 to great success, as the Artistic Director for the   Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020.

Kim Sung-ho graduated from the Department of Western Art and Culture, and the Department of Culture and Fine Arts (Graduate School), both at Chung-Ang University. Upon completing his studies in Korea, Kim received his Doctorate Degree in Esthetics and Science at Paris I (University of Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne). In 2018, he served as the Artistic Director for the Special Exhibition of Korea at the Dakar Biennale, Executive Director at the 2016 Suncheon Bay International Eco-Environmental Art Festival, and the Exhibition Director at the 2015 Sea Art Festival in Busan.

Kim said, "Priority will be given to establishing a clear identity for the Changwon Sculpture Biennale, and taking the steps necessary to differentiate it with other regional exhibitions or biennales. It is also important to understand the history and regional characteristics of Changwon if we want to configure the theme, purpose, and venues used for the Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020. As such, we will host various academic seminars to communicate and interact with the general public and artists.”

2020 is a particularly meaningful year for the city of Changwon as well. Not only will it host the Changwon Sculpture Biennale, but it is also looking forward to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the “United Changwon City” as we know it today. The Changwon Cultural Foundation and the city government are hoping that the Biennale will serve as an art festival for everyone in Changwon.

Hwang Moo-hyeon, Chairperson of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale Steering Committee, said, “Steering Committee members (14 members) and sub-committee members (5 members) for the Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 will work closely to support the Artistic Director, and establish detailed action plans by the end of the year. That way, hopefully, we can push forward for a perfect Biennale this year.”
