The Changwon Cultural Foundation is looking forward to hosting “All about Sculpture,” a free public lecture program designed to raise awareness ahead of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 in September. The program was originally scheduled to begin in March. Changwon Cultural Foundation, however, decided to postpone the program to May in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the Foundation is also reviewing the possibility of hosting the first session of the program online. The 12-part course program will start on May 9 and end on September 12.

Meanwhile, the Changwon Sculpture Biennale Steering Committee is looking to host a variety of events prior to the main events in September to explain the concept of the Biennale, which can be unfamiliar to the general public, and to build up anticipation for the Biennale. This public lecture program was developed as one of these initiatives by the Steering Committee. The program’s primary objective will be to help the general public understand the idea of “non-sculpture” - the main theme of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 - which is a phenomenon in contemporary sculpture aiming to transcend genre and methodologies.

As its name suggests, “All about Sculpture” will discuss the history of sculptures from ancient times to modern times early on in the program, then explore various examples of public art and sculpture parks, both of which entail social participation. During the second half, the program will discuss why sculptures presented via international art and culture events, such as the Changwon Sculpture Biennale, are so special, and learn about the specifics of contemporary sculptures that venture beyond conventional genres and methods.

All about Sculpture will feature a lineup of top art scholars and producers in Korea, including Professor Ko Jong-hee (Hanyang University - May), Yang Eun-hee (art historian - May), Yoon Tae-geon (CEO of The Tone - June), Hong Gyeong-han (art critic - July), Jeong Joon-mo (exhibition producer - August), and Kim Sung-ho (Artistic Director of Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 - September).

Kim Sung-ho, Artistic Director of Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020, said “This program is free for anyone interested in sculptures and those working in the field of art. It will give Changwon residents more opportunities to enjoy culture and art. In doing so, hopefully, it will raise awareness of Changwon Sculpture Biennale as the only biennale exhibition focusing on sculptures.”

Apart from its public lecture program, the Changwon Sculpture Biennale will include academic conferences (international and domestic), artist workshops, and other programs the general public can participate in.

※ In the event of any changes to events leading up to Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Steering Committee will announce details on the official Changwon Sculpture Biennale website (http://www.changwonbiennale.or.kr/).
