Sound Tree 2020
This work is by a sculptor who is famous for his Don Quixote series. SUNG made a new sculpture that would fit well into Yongji Park, which is a venue for the Biennale. As you can guess from the title, this is a sculpture that makes sound. Do you think a pre-recorded sound is being played back on speakers somewhere? No. There are numerous small ceramic bells hanging on each branch of this tree-shaped stainless-steel sculpture. Imagine – the delightful and clear ringing sound of the bells swinging to the cool breeze blowing through the park. The “invisible wind” shaking the bells makes this sculpture visualized into something that is “moving.” And through this “invisible sound,” a visual art is expanded to an audio-visual art, making this work both a sculpture AND a non-sculpture.
