This work is literally fire itself. Just look at the raging flames through the windows along the corridor on the third floor of Seongsan Art Hall. But there is no need to worry. No one is trying to set the hall on fire or put anyone in danger. TAHIRLI employed an analog technology that makes a fake fire look real with the flame effect. Flexible fabric materials fluttering in the fan-blown wind and various hues of lights all add to the reality of a flame. These days, such effect is often used to make a fake fireplace or other stage props and decorations. This work beautifully brings out the concept of non-sculpture, the theme of this year’s Biennale.
The artist drew his inspiration from the nickname of his country, the Land of Fire. Azerbaijan is known as the birthplace of Zoroastrianism, an ancient religion that believes the fire is sacred. The country is blessed with an abundance of oil and natural gas. It is also known for Yanar Dag, a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside. The fact that this fake fire art is made by an artist from the Land of Fire makes this piece all the more special.
