Wasted time II (Temps Perdu)
Is this art? Isn’t it just a heap of sand? You’re right, it is. This is the latest version of LEÓN’s work presented at Dak’Art Biennial in 2013. The new version installed at the Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 takes on a new meaning, in a departure from the previous version, which served as a reminder of the history of colonization on the African continent. You are looking at a pile of soil dug out from Yongji Park. So, this work has been moved from one exhibition space to another, from Main Exhibition 1 “From Non-Sculpture” to Main Exhibition 2 “To Non-Sculpture.” The dug-out hole is presented as is outdoors, and the soil that has been dug out is presented indoors. This work, which unfolds simultaneously in two different places, reminds us of the history of Changwon that the soil bears witness to. An hourglass placed on top of a cone of sand represents the meaning of time embedded in a substance called soil. The artist also explores the potential of non-sculpture where a heap of sand turns into art.
