Seated Figure
Here installed is a kinetic art, which means the sculpture moves. You see a nude sculpture of a young man with strong muscles made of silicone sitting in a comfortable position. After a while, the muscles start to disappear, leaving only an emaciated body of an old man. The air compressor inside the sculpture sucks in the air adsorbing the silicone skin, resulting in the skinny figure. This sculpture is continuously transfigured between the young and old by the timer and the air compressor. Just like breathing in and out, within that short time, the sculpture travels in time back and forth between Birth, Aging, Sickness, and Death. What do you think? In front of this work, we are reminded of what it means to live. LEE is challenging the definition of sculpture by making the inner part of a sculpture visible, which is impossible for the classical sculpture whose surface is the only part visible to the audience. By doing so, he is successfully carrying out a “non-sculptural sculpture” experiment.
