IRON
This work features a heap of melted rebar beams, in a shape that looks like a burial mound for rebar beams killed en masse. But it’s not made of actual rebar. LIU worked with a much lighter material cast in the shape of rebar to mimic its color and texture. In other words, it is faux rebar, made of lightweight material. The work is viewed as a non-sculpture that defies the ideal of sculpture. It seems as if the artist has declared the death of steel, a symbol of civilization. Could it be a statement of self-denial and self-reflection in response to today’s capitalist civilization?
