Sculpture Rituals
A TV screen plays a video of LESNIAK creating a sculpture. She is carving with a chisel and a hammer in the air. There’s nothing in front of her. Her creation continues in the form of labor, but nothing is being created. The artist is merely mimicking the act of sculpting. This in itself is a non-sculpture. What message is she trying to convey? Her performance of making an invisible sculpture questions the traditional forms of sculpture and the act of sculpting them. The title Sculpture Rituals well represents the self-reflective introspection about such behavior. The artist hid a message encrypted in Morse code in the sound of a hammer and a chisel. Take a closer look to find out what it is.
