Unnamed Monument
This work is a collaboration between artist Seung-Bok ROH and scientist Pan-Seop SHIN. It is a virtual stone and a holographic representation of its namesake sculpture in the Jeju 4•3 Peace Memorial Hall. The monument is a reminder of the painful legacy of the Jeju April 3 Massacre. Projected in the air, it is visible yet untouchable. With the help of a stone monument, ROH and SHIN seek to comfort the wounds of the traumatic past. The goal is to bring back our collective memories and heal the scars.
The pair relies on technology to add a sense of reality to the work and encourages dialogue over reality vs. fiction, the present vs. the past, and touch vs. sight. At the same time, they bring an element of versatility to stone, a traditional material for sculpture, making it light and flexible. The work demonstrates the possibility that one can derive a single, in-depth meaning instead of multiple meanings from a medium.
