Cannot See But Exist, Can See But Not Exist.

The cold storage of Seongsan Buffet Hall has been up-cycled and transformed into an exhibition space. This piece is the first collaboration between KANG, whose work involves mainly drawing, and LUO who works with media. KANG focused on the inevitable changes to ecosystem due to the struggles for survival as well as the mutation and evolution of organisms. Through her drawing and installation works, she presents her interpretation of the complex interactions between human and nature by taking various perspectives. LUO is a media artist who takes interest in changes of culture caused by time and environment. He looks for the traces of tradition (past) in the fast-changing city and materializes its nostalgia via different new media. For this Biennale, they present a work inspired by their shared interest in the phenomenon of “Uncanny” caused by a cognitive uncertainty, which they both experienced when they were working in the U.S. Taking KANG’s drawings that reflect her thoughts on being alive (existing), change, and absence, LUO adds new colors and rhythm based on his own interpretation of KANG’s drawings utilizing the projection mapping technology. In the end, their collaboration transforms the existing space into something completely different.
