What is natural and what is synthetic? The white plastic balls not only emulate the oceans but also represent the petroleum floating in the sea whose origin is plankton of the past. We see a sailor’s journal titled Sailor’s Retrospect 1 Ronny on the rustic wall that inspired the artist. Just like ships rust in the sea, this wall demonstrates how everything in the end is oxidized. D’SOUZA’s poetic interpretation of two types of mammals, human and whale, depicts that dilemma. Just like sailors who must keep on sailing despite their harmful effect on the environment, and just like whales and planktons finally return as petroleum after being fossilized for a thousand years, this causality profoundly resonates with us through the artist’s work that reflects the philosophies of Nietzscheism and Buddhism.
