Temporary Autonomous Zones

All you can see is just a dark space? Why don’t you follow the instructions on the wall near the entrance and put on the VR headset? Some huge sculptures will appear in front of you. In the virtual reality, the temporary autonomous zone, where the temporary sculptures stand, acts as a territory of resistance to power and then is soon dissolved into void before being suppressed or absorbed. These sculptures and the temporary zone the sculptures created work quite similarly to how the business works in real-estate that transforms cities by rearranging urban spaces. The contemporary art, to the artist, is also defined by the sprawl of places and lack of responsibility. Witnessing art works becoming mere economic assets as well as the rise and fall of art market in which art’s public nature and private wealth collide, we are reminded of the slowly-dissipating public space. Through this work, AHN is speaking about how the sculpture business is at the core of it all and many artists in their mid-30s like himself end up going down the road that leads to the sprawl of places and lack of responsibility.
